Drivetrain Parts
The drivetrain is a complex system of components that transfer power from the engine to the wheels of a vehicle. Before selecting replacement parts, it is important to understand how the system works. The driveshaft is the first major area, connecting the engine to the axles that rotate the wheels. Couplers, sleeves, and dust shields work together with the driveshaft to absorb vibrations and protect against wear. The differential is another major component of the drivetrain that allows the wheels to rotate at different speeds, enabling the vehicle to navigate turns.
Small components play a significant role in the functioning of the drivetrain. Constant velocity joints, or CV joints, create a low-friction transmission of power from the driveshaft to the wheels. These joints are an improvement on the original universal joint or U-joint. Friction clutches, commonly used in automatic transmissions, rely on the friction between the flywheel and clutch plate to rotate the wheels and move the car. The hydraulic drivetrain system is a newer design that uses a hydraulic transmission with a pressurized fluid power source, making it ideal for commercial vehicles.
High-performance vehicles require more power, and power take-off or PTO assembly is used in trucks designed for heavy-duty tasks. Other vehicles used for material handling may have additional components, such as the drive sprocket or roller chains, used to transmit power to the caterpillar tracks.
RaceHard offers all the components needed to keep the drivetrain running smoothly. Small parts such as yokes, bearings, and bushings are essential for connecting the driveshaft to other components. Wheel components such as tires, hub caps, and gaskets are also considered drivetrain parts.
